As a child, there was a professional basketball player that I used to follow. It was easy for me to relate to him: he was talented and I admired his work ethic. He was the type of player that left crowds in awe with moves that were impressive. After entering the NBA, he was a novelty. I asked for his jersey for Christmas one year and.....I got it! I went to get a poster of him and......I bought it! Quickly, he became a greatly admired idol in my life.
Throughout my life, I've seen God do unusually visible works. For example, when I was in high school, I attended a Bible study with some of the other students. One day, we were talking about spiritual warfare and it freaked me out. I went back home and headed straight for my room. I flipped the light on, turned the Christian radio on, and grabbed my Bible to start reading. While I was reading, words literally entered my mind that stated, "I stand in awe." I thought about those words for a while, and I decided to say them out loud as a prayer. Then, as soon as I finished saying them an unexpected event happened. The radio switched from the middle of a song to the chorus of another song named, "I stand in awe of You!" This is just one example of many others.
Oh, how great is Your goodness,
Which You have laid up for those who fear You,
Which You have prepared for those who trust in You
In the presence of the sons of men! Psalm 31:19
His goodness is everlasting, eternal, perpetual, never-ending, undying, abiding, infinite, boundless, and timeless. Once the Holy Spirit draws you to the Truth (Jesus), we can be reconnected to God.
Fortunately, to complete my story about the basketball player who was my idol, the more goodness from God that I've seen the less I desire to idolize people. When Jesus calls us, we are to leave and follow. "They immediately left their nets and followed Him" (Mark 1:18). In the book of Mark, Jesus approached a couple of fisherman at their place of employment and spoke with them. After He did, the left their nets and followed Him. To keep it simple, remember today to just leave and follow.
