Whatever You Like

"Long as you got me you won't need nobody/You want it, I got it, go, get it, I buy it...you can have whatever you like"

The music sounds good. The lyrics sound good. But the content is horrible. Think about it. "You want it, I got it, go, get it, I buy it." This is the mindset many of us wish that we had.

Music is more than just a beat. It is also composed of words. Sometimes people say, "I just listen to this song because I like the beat." Question: when you go throughout your day what do you sing? Answer: the lyrics. Whether you want to hear this or not, the type of music you listen to influences the way you think, feel, and act. This is true no matter who you are.

Personally, this was a painful one for me. Why? Competition is thicker in industries that produce this type of music, so, it often comes out sounding better. Now, this is not a broad sweeping statement. Many artists who care about the message they send us are very talented.

We should be careful about what we put inside of our ears. I'm not suggesting that we go to the extreme and cut ourselves off from the world. I think this is also equally detrimental. One extreme affirms the messed up content of a song and is influenced by it. The other extreme boycotts the messed up content of a song and loses contact and relevance to the very people they are wanting to influence. We should be able to know what is going on and yet watch what we put inside of our minds at the same time.

Here are some thoughts to remember today:

Romans 12:2
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

1 Timothy 6:7
For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.
